I am an experienced primary care optometrist who has been both an associate and a cold-start practice owner. In the fall of 2024, I started teaching at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry & Vision Science as a lab instructor. I was honoured to receive the Distinguished Teaching Assistant Award from the University of Waterloo Optometry Student Society (UWOSS) for that school year.
I've had the privilege of teaching the classes of 2026, 2027, and 2028 and it's been amazing to watch them turn into optometrists right in front of my eyes. Now, I'm excited to set my students and other optometry students up for success by providing a way for them to start their job search early and ensure they will get the BEST job offer possible after graduation. If you’re still a long way from graduation, you can use OD MatchMaker to find a summer job.
In addition, as a former practice owner, I sympathize with the many owners who are in need of an associate and can't find one, especially those who need one for their exit plan. Optometrists are in high demand in Canada and the US and I am happy to provide my colleagues with a way to build relationships with optometry students who plan to practice in their area after graduation. Hopefully, this will make it easier to not only find an associate, but to find the RIGHT associate for their practices. Owners can even use the platform to find summer students, allowing them to ‘scout’ future talent while getting the extra help they need during the summer.
